January is, of course, named for Janus, the Roman god of doorways and gates, beginnings and endings. Janus is usually depicted with two faces, looking in opposite directions, which seems appropriate when thinking about the record breaking weather we have already experienced in 2023.
We may only be ten days into a new year, but Warsaw had already broken its all-time January record on New Years Day.
To see the effects of the climate crisis, we have to look back to compare what is happening now, with what has typically happened in the past. But at this time of year, we also can't help looking forwards - which in many ways is even more terrifying.
As this incredibly scary and depressing thread shows, the coming years are not going to be a good time to be a glacier:
